Kratom vs CBD: Different Plants, Different Receptor Systems, Different Research Applications
Science · 7 min · 2026-04-18
CBD and kratom are often discussed together as "botanical alternatives" but they work through completely different mechanisms. This is what each does and when they are used in research.
# Kratom vs CBD: Different Plants, Different Receptor Systems, Different Research Applications
CBD (cannabidiol) and kratom (*Mitragyna speciosa*) are frequently grouped together as "botanical alternatives" in consumer marketing. In reality they are chemically unrelated, they act on different receptor systems, and their research applications barely overlap. Here is the breakdown.
## Different Plants
CBD is an isolated compound from *Cannabis sativa* — hemp. Kratom alkaloids come from *Mitragyna speciosa*, a tropical tree in the coffee family. The plants are unrelated botanically.
## Different Receptor Targets
CBD primarily interacts with the endocannabinoid system — CB1 and CB2 receptors, plus a growing list of other targets including 5-HT1A serotonin receptors and TRPV1. It is a low-affinity, indirect modulator of CB receptors rather than a direct agonist.
Kratom alkaloids — chiefly mitragynine and [7-OH](/blog/7oh-vs-mitragynine) — are partial mu-opioid agonists with some alpha-adrenergic and serotonergic activity. Completely different system.
This matters because research questions in one category rarely translate to the other. CBD literature on anxiety or inflammation does not predict kratom outcomes, and vice versa.
## Legal Status in Canada
CBD is tightly regulated under the Cannabis Act and is typically sold through licensed cannabis retailers. Kratom and 7-OH products are sold in Canada as research and botanical products outside the Cannabis Act framework. Different regulatory path entirely. See our [Canadian legal status guide](/blog/kratom-canada-legal-status) for current kratom rules.
## Dosing
CBD is dosed in milligrams and research ranges run 10 mg to several hundred mg per study. Kratom powder is dosed in grams. [7-OH tablets](/product/pure-7oh-labs-blue-raz) are dosed in single-digit milligrams — closer to CBD numerically but on a completely different compound.
## Onset and Duration
CBD oil sublingual onset is 15-45 minutes, peak at 1-2 hours, duration 4-6 hours. 7-OH tablets have broadly similar pharmacokinetics but the underlying mechanism means the observed effects differ significantly.
## Can They Be Combined?
Research combining the two is limited. Given the different receptor systems, pharmacokinetic interactions are possible but not well characterized. Standard research caution applies.
## Buying Consideration
CBD quality varies wildly in the Canadian market. Licensed cannabis retailers are regulated but selection is limited. Kratom and 7-OH products are also variable in quality — third-party lab testing is non-negotiable either way. See our [lab results](/lab-results) for our COAs, and our guide on [why testing matters](/blog/importance-of-lab-testing).
## The Summary
Kratom and CBD look similar from a marketing standpoint ("botanical wellness") but are completely different compounds targeting completely different biology. If you are researching endocannabinoid effects, use CBD. If you are researching opioid partial agonism, use kratom or [isolated 7-OH](/shop).
