New to 7-OH? This no-hype, beginner-friendly guide covers the science, the product formats, and the practical considerations for Canadian research-context use.
# Beginner's Guide to 7-Hydroxymitragynine: What It Is, How It Works, How to Start
If you have just encountered 7-OH products and are trying to figure out what they actually are, this guide gets you oriented. No hype, no marketing language — just the information a researcher or new buyer needs to make a starting decision.
## What is 7-OH?
7-hydroxymitragynine is one of forty-plus alkaloids found in the kratom plant (*Mitragyna speciosa*). It is present in small quantities — typically under 2% of total alkaloids in the leaf — but is pharmacologically one of the most active by mass. See [7-OH vs mitragynine](/blog/7oh-vs-mitragynine) for the compound-level comparison or [7-OH vs kratom](/blog/7oh-vs-kratom) for how the naming fits together.
## How is it Produced?
Two paths. Natural: harvest kratom leaves, extract total alkaloids, separate 7-OH from the spectrum using HPLC or equivalent chromatography. Semi-synthetic: start from mitragynine and oxidize to 7-OH under controlled conditions. Most modern tablets use the semi-synthetic route because yield is higher and purity is easier to control.
## Product Formats You Will Encounter
- [Tablets](/product/pure-7oh-labs-blue-raz): pressed, precise dose per unit, tasteless
- [Kratom shots](/product/bare-kratom-shots-blue-razz): flavoured liquid, faster onset
- [Whole leaf powder](/shop): full alkaloid spectrum, not isolated 7-OH
- Extracts: concentrated alkaloid fractions, variable composition
Our [comparison of product types](/blog/comparing-kratom-product-types) walks through each in detail.
## What to Look for When Buying
- Third-party lab results on the product page
- Canadian warehouse address (avoid drop-shipping from overseas)
- Clear labelling of 7-OH content per unit in milligrams
- Return policy and customer reviews
- Payment methods with consumer protection
See [why lab testing matters](/blog/importance-of-lab-testing) and [Canadian vs imported](/blog/canadian-kratom-vs-imported).
## Legal Status in Canada
7-OH and kratom products are sold in Canada as research and botanical products. They are not controlled substances but they are also not approved for human consumption. Shipping to every Canadian province is legal; individual provincial rules around marketing and sale vary slightly. See [our Canadian legal guide](/blog/kratom-canada-legal-status).
## Starting Research Framework
Read our [dosage research guide](/blog/7oh-dosage-research-guide) for specific dose ranges. The short version: start at the lowest available dose, keep records, titrate slowly, and do not combine with opioid-class compounds without specific research design.
## Storage
Airtight, cool, dark. Potency degrades faster under heat and UV. [Tablets](/product/pure-7oh-labs-blue-raz) in original packaging store best. See [the storage guide](/blog/storing-kratom-products).
## Red Flags to Avoid
- Vendors without COAs or with COAs from unnamed labs
- Products shipped direct from overseas with no Canadian stock
- "Proprietary blend" labels without stated 7-OH content
- Prices well below market average — usually signal adulteration
- No return policy
## Ready to Order
Our [catalogue](/shop) has tablets, shots, and blends. Every product is lab-tested, shipped from Canada, and comes with a standard return policy. New customers typically start with the standard [5 mg tablets](/product/pure-7oh-labs-blue-raz) — our [how-to-order guide](/how-to-order) walks through the checkout flow.
